What’s my retirement target number?
Start here. Before you plan how to save, you need to know your goal. Enter your expected annual spending in retirement and we’ll work out the number.
The 4% Rule (also called the Safe Withdrawal Rate) is one of the most widely used retirement planning guidelines. Research from Trinity University found that retirees who withdraw 4% of their portfolio per year have historically been able to sustain their savings for 30+ years โ even through market downturns.
The formula is simple: Annual Expenses ร 25 = Your Retirement Number. Why 25? Because 1 รท 4% = 25. If your portfolio is 25ร your annual spending, you can safely withdraw 4% each year and โ with average investment returns โ your savings should last indefinitely.
